The Village of Mont Saint Michel

This amazing village is a UNESCO World Heritage site located on an island just off the coast of Normandy France and although quite small, they welcome tourism.  For centuries, people from all over the world have been traveling here to visit the well-preserved Norman Benedictine Abbey of St Michel at the top of the island. The abbey, surrounded by winding streets and medieval architecture of the town has been a holy site since 708 when a bishop had a vision of the Archangel Michael convincing him to build here.

Since medieval times, Mont Saint Michel has houses, fed, watered, and sold trinkets to travelers who visit.  Today the village, home to less than 50 residents, has a Main Street lined with hotels and shops leading up to the abbey.  The island is one of the most popular tourist destinations in France and gets more than 2.5 million visitors each year.

The village area of Mont Saint Michel doesn’t have open or close hours or an admission fee but to enter the abbey, it’s around $10 for adults and children are free.  The best time to visit the island to avoid the crowds and find the best travel rates is November through March.
