Charleston, South Carolina
One of the first cities to observe Memorial Day, it was said to be held here by a group of freed slaves, just weeks after the Civil War ended in 1865. Known as the world-famous Spoleta Festival, it fills Charleston’s theaters, churches and outdoor spaces with music of all varieties; with opera, theater, jazz, symphonies, choruses and even visual arts. Also located in Charleston is The Citadel, a nearly 200-year-old military college, as well as various Civil War sites that can be seen throughout the city.
New Orleans, Louisiana
With something for everyone, including families, New Orleans has great attractions like the Aquarium of the Americas, The Insectarium and The Audubon Zoo. Greek Fest is also a fun event, celebrating the city’s earliest Greek settlers commemorate their heritage with a festival including fun, music and Greek food for the whole family. There’s also the New Orleans Wine and Food Experience and the National World War II Museum has amazing exhibits and it commemorates the holiday with a performance by the Marine Corps quintet Monday morning.
Palm Springs, California
Memorial Day Week,end is when it starts getting pretty warm in the desert, which means you can find great specials over the holiday weekend. Amazing food, outdoor activities as well as lots of unique vintage shops. A great place to spend the weekend outdoors exploring the spectacular desert landscape at Joshua Tree National Park, with miles of hiking trails and mountain bike treks as well as incredible rock climbing spots. Each Memorial Day the Palm Springs Air Museum hosts the Flower Drop & Air Fair, with thousands of white and red carnations dropped from its B-25 aircraft.
New York City, New York
Memorial Day weekend is a great time to visit the big city because it’s the official start of summer, so many New Yorker’s leave the city for the holiday weekend. Fleet Week, which is from May 20 to May 26 this year, is an event that offers visitors the chance to tour ships docked in Manhattan and Staten Island. The visitors also get to see military demonstrations and meet men and women who are currently serving in the U.S. Navy, Marines and Coast Guard. The Brooklyn Memorial Day Parade is a tradition in the Bay Ridge neighborhood since 1867, and ends at John Paul Jones Park for a ceremony honoring those who’ve served.
Washington D.C.
Heading to the nation’s capital seems like a fitting place to be for Memorial Day. During this time of year the hotel rates drop a bit and temperatures are often ideal, making outdoor activities more enjoyable. The National Memorial Day Parade and memorials at Arlington National Cemetery in addition to the incredible museums and the annual Memorial Day Concert the perfect way to commemorate the holiday.
